Ketamine Therapy
Ketamine is a widely used, Health Canada and FDA approved anesthetic, which has been available for this purpose since 1970. In recent years, and at lower doses than for anesthesia, Ketamine has also been found to alleviate the symptoms of certain severe, treatment-resistant mental health conditions and chronic pain, as well as with alleviating the cravings for certain drugs and alcohol. Although Ketamine is not FDA or Health Canada approved for the treatment of these above mentioned ailments, like many medications, it can be used in what is called an "off-label" manner. This means that licensed physicians, because of their extensive training and understanding of medication‘s, may use certain drugs to treat conditions that are not listed on the medication’s label.
The research to understand exactly how Ketamine therapy works is still ongoing. Currently, it is understood that Ketamine binds to certain receptors in the brain that release an increased amount of the neurotransmitter Glutamate. This triggers a cascade of reactions within the brain which positively affects thinking and emotional regulation. This can occur within minutes after the first Ketamine administration, but some individuals may need several treatments before they experience the maximum benefit for their underlying condition.
The response to Ketamine therapy, and the duration of the response is unique for every patient. In general, most patients achieve improvements in their symptoms for a short period of time. The duration of this improvement also varies with each patient. Reports exist that show improvement in symptoms of mental health conditions and chronic pain for weeks, months or even longer. Those individuals who show the most sustained improvement are actively involved in comprehensive care.
