Conditions
Ketamine therapy is an innovative new treatment that is helping provide rapid relief for individuals suffering from many different conditions such as treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD, chronic pain, OCD and certain substance use disorders. It is often very time consuming to treat these conditions with conventional therapies, as it is not uncommon for an individual to try several strategies before they find one that provides some relief, if any at all. Ketamine is shown to work faster than these aforementioned therapies while also reducing the often moderate to severe side effects that accompany them.
Depression
Depression is characterized as the persistent feeling of sadness or loss of interest in things that were once enjoyable. Feeling depressed can lead to a range of physical and behavioral symptoms such as changes in sleep, energy level, appetite, concentration, overall demeanor, or self-esteem. Depression can also be associated with thoughts of suicide. Medication and therapy may be effective at decreasing or resolving the symptoms of depression, however a large percentage of patients do not find lasting relief using these conventional methods.
Anxiety
If you experience excessive fear, worry, or even panic on a daily basis, you may be suffering from an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders often interfere with everyday life and you may find yourself avoiding people, places and situations. If you’ve unsuccessfully tried other treatment methods, such as medication or cognitive-behavioral therapy, Ketamine treatments may offer a solution.
PTSD
PTSD stands for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. This condition is primarily caused after experiencing some form of traumatic event. Untreated PTSD can lead to intrusive recurring memories, hopelessness, and avoidance and detachment from family, friends, or situations. PTSD may also accompany severe depression, anxiety, or even suicidal thoughts or actions. If PTSD is interfering with your life, Ketamine therapy may be the right option for you.
Chronic Pain
When you have an injury, pain sensors are triggered that send messages through your nerves to let your brain know that you are hurt. In most instances, the pain will cease once the cause of the problem is resolved. Pain is described as chronic when it has continued for longer than 12 weeks, or long after the injury is considered resolved. The pain may be constant or intermittent, and is often harder to treat with conventional methods. Individuals often describe feeling exhausted, worn out, or even angry about the effects and limitations that chronic pain has on their lives.
Ketamine works to relieve pain by inhibiting the N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors on nerve cells, particularly active in hyperalgesia states.
Ketamine therapy may be right for you if you want to avoid traditional pain medications, if medications or other therapies have not worked, have stopped working for you, or you want to try a treatment that not only offers pain relief, but also has anti-inflammatory effects.
OCD
OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a condition characterized by intrusive and frequent obsessions and repetitive and ritualistic behaviors. This disorder is thought of as a lifelong condition and can be mild, moderate, or severe. Individuals with OCD describe feeling driven to do things with an irresistible urge in order to relieve stress and feel better. Ignoring these urges is not easy, and if temporarily managed, the urges most often return. An obsession is a persistent and unwanted thought, image, or urge that enters the mind and triggers distress, while a compulsion is recurrent behavior or mental act carried out to provide relief, brought on by the distress of the obsession. Common obsessions include fear of contamination, fear of harm, excessive concern with exactness or orderliness, and anxiety related to unwelcomed thoughts. Common compulsions include washing or cleaning, ordering or arranging things, repetitive actions, repetitive words or phrases, and mental rituals. OCD can be a debilitating condition that can significantly impact everyday life, but individuals with previous treatment-resistant OCD have experienced great long-lasting results with Ketamine therapy.
Substance Use Disorder
Ketamine is not a treatment for alcohol or substance use disorder, however, it has shown to lessen the symptoms of withdrawal. Ketamine is a great adjunct for the treatment of withdrawal because of its rapid onset, it's lack of respiratory suppression, anti-seizure activity, and ability to control acute agitation. Recent studies suggest an overall decrease in cravings, as well as a significant improvement in long-term abstinence rates when Ketamine therapy is used.
